Jamaica Inn

Civic Award from Cornwall Council

Jamaica Inn has been presented with a Civic Award by Chairman of Cornwall Council, Mary May, at an official ceremony on 1 May for providing refuge to over a 100 motorists stranded in the snow on the A30 that dreadful night of the snowstorm that hit Cornwall on 31 January.  All bedrooms quickly became full but motorists continued to make for the Inn most of the night and were accommodated in the bars and Pedlars restaurant without charge, laying on camp beds, X beds, spare blankets and eventually even towels but thankfully enough blankets were found for everyone to be covered. Log fires were kept going and the kitchen served complimentary food like burgers and bacon butties all night. The emergency help was organised by the Inn’s General Manager, Sammy Wheeler, assisted by some 8 stalwart staff members who stayed all night and got little sleep.
